How do I clean an infected computer?

Problem: User complaining about many pop-ups showing up when they open Internet Explorer

Solution:

1. Cleared all files from temp directory; remember you can get to temp directory by typing %temp% from command prompt or windows explorer
2. Uninstalled all non business applications (spybots, advertising programs, win popup programs, etc. (i.e. all the junk)
3. Cleaned out ALL programs from startup using the registry (see: http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/startupreg.htm )
4. Used Internet options in control panel to delete all cookies, delete all temporary internet files
5. clicked the "managed pop-up button" and disabled all junk add-ons. (i.e. anything except Microsoft, Adobe, Sun, Yahoo, Google)
6. Restart computer
